Ohio Wesleyan University starts its 2018 academic year, and it also starts the beginning of a new varsity wrestling program. Wrestling was a varsity sport at Ohio Wesleyan in the 1920s and again from 1956-84. Ray Leech ’49 reformed the wrestling team when he joined the Ohio Wesleyan faculty in 1954 and oversaw it for 30 years, coaching 16 Ohio Athletic Conference individual champions along the way. In 1984, with Leech retiring and Ohio Wesleyan leaving the OAC to help form the NCAC, wrestling was discontinued. But there has always been a club team that has generated enough interest to merit bringing back an official varsity team. I talked to Coach Paul Reid, about having an opportunity to start a varsity team from scratch.
